ReSkate Not Working? Fixes for Common Errors

Fixes for ReSkate problems: menu not opening, launcher crashes, black screens, mods not loading, and session join failures.

Last updated: 2026-10-15

Most ReSkate problems come down to a handful of causes: a launch through the wrong shortcut, a version mismatch after an update, or antivirus interfering with the runtime. This troubleshooting guide walks the fixes in the order that solves the most cases fastest, from a missing menu to crashes and session errors.

First: the two-minute checks

Run these before anything deeper; they clear most reports:

  1. You launched skate. through the ReSkate launcher, not the Steam shortcut.
  2. Your ReSkate version matches the newest release, and your game build is the one that release supports (see updates).
  3. Your antivirus or Windows Defender has an exclusion for the ReSkate folder and the game directory.
  4. Mods currently enabled are built for your version; disable them all and re-test if unsure.

Still broken? Work through the sections below by symptom.

The Insert menu does not appear

When the ReSkate menu never shows in game, the runtime did not load. In order of likelihood: the game started from Steam (fix: launch via the launcher, always), the game build moved past your ReSkate version (fix: update ReSkate; if no compatible release exists yet, wait a day or two, the maintainers move fast), or the DLL was blocked at launch (fix: antivirus exclusion, then reinstall the runtime from the launcher).

A launcher that opens and closes immediately is the same story from the other side: something blocked its write to the game folder. Exclude the folder, run the launcher once as administrator to repair, then drop back to a normal launch.

Black screen or crash on startup

Black screens after the splash usually mean a stale or conflicting mod, not a broken install:

  1. Disable every mod in the launcher.
  2. Start the game; if it reaches the park, re-enable mods one at a time until the crash returns.
  3. Replace or remove the mod that breaks it, and check its page for a version matching your build.

Crashes on every launch with zero mods enabled point at the platform: verify game files in Steam (right-click skate. > Properties > Installed Files), then do the clean reinstall of ReSkate. Graphics drivers matter more here than people expect; update them before assuming the worst.

Mods and maps not loading

A mod that toggles on but does nothing is almost always a version mismatch; see the mods guide for the update-and-retest loop. A custom map that crashes on load carries the same diagnosis, plus one extra: check the map's required scripts are enabled. Maps that fail only in group sessions, while working solo, are desyncs from mismatched versions across players; the multiplayer guide covers syncing a group.

Session and join errors

Join failures split by symptom: stuck-at-joining is a mod mismatch between host and joiner, cannot-connect is a firewall or version gap between the server and clients, and a kick at map swap means the joiner lacks that map. Dedicated-server hosts should confirm the server's ReSkate version is not older than the players'; the server guide has the port and firewall checklist.

Still stuck

At this point the bug is real and worth reporting. Post on the GitHub issues page with your versions and steps, or ask in the ReSkate Discord where most setup questions get answered same-day.
